Toronto, ON - Canada’s climate promises are crumbling, and government inaction is putting our future on the line. The Canadian Climate Institute warns that Canada is now off track to meet its 2030 emissions target, with the oil and gas sector, especially the oilsands, driving emissions higher while other sectors continue to ratchet down emissions.
“Communities across Canada have just faced the second-worst wildfire season on record,” said Amara Possian, Canada Team Lead at 350.org. “Meanwhile, Carney continues to prop up fossil fuel corporations and fast-track oil and gas projects, leading to even more emissions. Every year that oil and gas emissions rise, communities are left to burn, drown, freeze, and choke.”
Canada’s emissions are only 8.5% below 2005 levels, nowhere near the 40–45% reduction needed by 2030. Experts say achieving that would require 40 megatonnes of CO₂ reductions per year; something Canada has no policies to deliver.
We demand real action now:
- No new oil and gas projects
- End subsidies for oil and gas companies
- Make polluters pay
- Fund a just transition to 100% renewable energy at home and abroad
On September 20th, tens of thousands of Canadians will mobilize across 65+ cities to draw the line: we will not allow corporate profit and government inaction to destroy our future. Full details at drawtheline.world/dtl-canada-s11.
